Instructor - David Kaarsemaker

In these classes, we will explore different ways of creating the illusion of light and shadow in drawing, including smudging and erasing, shading using white Conté on dark paper, and cross-hatching. This class will draw inspiration from the exhibition Beauty of Mending—Kintsugi and Beyond and consider ideas from Jun’ichiro Tanizaki’s essay In Praise of Shadows to explore the concepts of light and darkness in drawing and aesthetics more broadly.
